virtuAlitalia was a virtual airline that brought together enthusiasts of civil aviation and professional flight simulation at a time when the web itself was still taking shape.
In the early days of personal computing, long before online simulation became mainstream, virtuAlitalia demonstrated that with a computer, dedicated peripherals, flight simulation software, and an internet connection, it was possible to faithfully reproduce the real-world operations performed daily by airline pilots across the globe.
Building on this vision, virtuAlitalia offered aviation enthusiasts an ambitious and structured experience: the opportunity to become a Virtual Airline Pilot.
The project was conceived not as a game, but as a serious simulation environment inspired by real-world airline standards.
virtuAlitalia developed a complete organizational structure that allowed members to earn virtual flight certifications through dedicated training programs, designed and supervised by real airline captains and instructors. These training paths were structured to mirror, over time, the actual career progression of a commercial airline pilot.
This approach made virtuAlitalia a true virtual training ground: a place to test aptitude for aviation, to learn discipline and procedures, or simply to enjoy flying while building lasting friendships within a healthy, collaborative community.
All flight operations and technical procedures were reproduced with high fidelity, following as closely as possible the operational model of Alitalia, Italy’s national carrier at the time.
Operational organization, technical management, human resources, fleet and infrastructure management, and information technology were all continuously developed as integral parts of the virtuAlitalia ecosystem.
Beyond flight operations, virtuAlitalia also promoted a strong cultural and educational dimension. Debates, gatherings, conferences, and specialized courses dedicated to flight simulation and civil aviation were regularly organized.
virtuAlitalia was also a source of information.
vAZ Crew, freely available on the website, was among the first online publications entirely dedicated to aviation simulation, edited and curated by the virtuAlitalia staff.
The project established collaborations worldwide and actively cooperated with major international organizations involved in aviation and aeronautical simulation.
Through specific agreements with Alitalia, the most distinguished virtuAlitalia pilots were granted access to official programs developed by the national airline for flight enthusiasts and aspiring professional pilots.
In 1999, virtuAlitalia became the first virtual airline to win the European Championships of Instrumental Flight, held in Belgium — a title it still holds as a historical milestone.
The virtuAlitalia trademark was also associated with IASO (International Aeronautical Simulation Organization - managed by Alessandro Mavilio and Elia Lombardo), one of the earliest entities dedicated to the study, development, and deployment of simulation systems and tools for companies and institutions, offering both professional services and specialized products aligned with the project’s mission.
Today, virtuAlitalia stands as a landmark initiative of the early internet era: a pioneering experiment that anticipated many of the structures, communities, and standards that would later become central to online simulation/gaming and virtual aviation worldwide.
